Can AI find a cheaper yarn that will still fit your knitting pattern?
You find a jumper pattern you love, then price the yarn and close the tab. Asking an AI assistant for a cheaper substitute seems like a sensible way back to the project. I would use its answer as a shortlist, though, not a shopping order. The Craft Yarn Council’s existing guidance says yarn-weight categories are not an interchangeability chart. Two yarns in the same category still need a gauge swatch: a small sample you knit to check how many stitches and rows fit into a measured space. That affects the finished size. Even when the gauge matches, softness and drape can differ. Give the assistant the actual pattern requirements and ask it to link to the suggested yarn’s label information. Then, if practical, buy enough for a sample before buying the whole project’s worth. Check the measurements against the pattern and whether you like the fabric it makes. A cheaper jumper that feels wrong to wear is an expensive pile of evenings. This is a way I would narrow the shopping, not a yarn comparison I have tested. The little sample gets the final say, even if the chatbot calls the match perfect.

I'd ask for the estimated cost of yarn for your chosen size, not the price of one ball. The Craft Yarn Council lists yards or metres separately from grams on the label; a cheaper ball may contain less yarn. Give the assistant the pattern's required length and the replacement's labelled length, and check how many whole balls the estimate needs. Include delivery before calling it a saving. That is a budgeting check I'd use, not a yarn comparison I've run. It helps answer whether this project is affordable before you spend an evening testing a substitute that would cost more overall.
