Where are the other pictures in a Google Photos stack?

You took several pictures of a family lunch. Later, the gallery shows one, but not the frame where your dad was laughing. Before assuming that picture has vanished, check whether the visible photo is a stack. Google's existing Android help says to open the stack and scroll the filmstrip at the bottom to see the pictures inside. Photos automatically chooses a ‘Top pick’ as the cover. You can choose another image, then use its thumbnail menu → Set as top pick. That choice is separate from marking a photo as a favourite. Google described this grouping as AI-powered when it introduced Photo Stacks in 2023. It is an existing feature, not a new launch or something I've tested here. The current help also makes a useful distinction: stacking changes the view, not your available storage. A tidier gallery does not mean the other pictures were removed. I'd want the first stack someone opens to say ‘Your other photos are still here,’ with the filmstrip easy to spot. And I would look through those frames before choosing any option to delete the rest. Similar pictures can hold very different memories; the sharpest face isn't always the expression you wanted to keep.

If you're sending pictures of a broken hinge to someone who can fix it, check the sharing choice too. Google's Android guide says ‘Selected items only’ shares just the top pick when you share a stack from Photos view; ‘Includes photo stacks’ shares every picture in it. For a useful close-up plus a wider shot, open the stack, use the thumbnail menu → Multi-select, and choose those frames yourself. I'd check that selection before sending, rather than assume the cover image tells me what's attached. That could save the repairer asking for the angle you thought you'd already sent. This is the documented sharing route, not a repair exchange I've tested.

Turning stacks off is a reasonable choice, too. If you keep wondering where your pictures went, you don't have to learn to like the tidier view. Google's Android guide gives the switch as More → Stack similar photos. If you're helping someone else, offer to show them both views and let them choose; don't change it on their behalf. Finding their own pictures comfortably matters more than keeping a feature switched on.

I'd show ‘Remove from stack’ before showing the bin. Google's Android guide gives separate instructions for removing selected pictures from a stack and deleting them. It also says that holding a stack in Photos view and choosing Trash moves the entire stack to trash, not just its cover. If someone wants their pictures visible separately again, that is a surprisingly costly wrong turn. I'd explain those two choices while helping them change the view, rather than let one visible photo imply one selected photo. This is a distinction in the guide, not an accident I've observed.
