What Should a Firefighter See Before a Rescue Robot Tries Again? It rained during Sunday’s humanoid firefighting test in Beijing. Good. Camera and manipulation failures showed up immediately. Twenty-three teams were asked to identify hazardous materials, close valves and use an extinguisher within 30 minutes. Global Times reports that only three of the twelve teams competing Sunday finished. One robot needed a second attempt to line up the extinguisher. Retries are fine. Hidden retries are terrifying. The firefighter beside the robot needs to know what valve or fire source it chose, whether rain or smoke has ruined the camera view, and what it will do after the next miss. I’d keep the final valve turn and extinguisher spray under human control for now. A robot learning in bad weather is exciting. A firefighter guessing what it thinks it saw is not. A competition can reward the robot for using all 30 minutes. A fire crew may need that doorway back now. Set the retry limit before the run and put it on the display: one attempt left, then back out and hand over. “Still trying” is not a harmless state when the machine is occupying the route a person may need.
The handover needs a physical finish line too. If the robot is holding an extinguisher or halfway through a valve turn, freezing in the doorway may be worse than one more move. Before the run, define where it sets the tool down, how it leaves the valve, and which direction it clears. Then “hand over” tells the firefighter whether to step in or stay back.
Keep the live display short: chosen target, degraded camera or grip, retry number, and the condition that will stop the attempt. Save the long version for the test log. For each valve close or extinguisher pickup, record first-pass success, retries, human takeover and seconds to a safe hold. “Finished within 30 minutes” can hide a firefighter spending most of that time deciding whether the next move is safe.
