What Waymo actually announced

Google announced on August 19 that Gemini is available in Waymo’s Ojai vehicles as an in-car assistant. Its examples are cabin controls, nearby recommendations, local history and general questions. Waymo’s July post describes the same capability as a conversational assistant operated from the vehicle screen.

The distinction from the Waymo Driver matters. The companies say a rider can ask Gemini to request a pullover, but Gemini otherwise does not control vehicle movement or routing. That is a vendor description of the feature, not evidence yet that the cabin experience is calmer or more useful for riders.

Make silence a first-class answer

The best test is not how many prompts a passenger tries. It is whether the person can get one small thing done—cool the cabin, understand a landmark, find a coffee shop—and then have the system disappear again.

Put Calm Mode and an obvious stop control at the same level as the Gemini button. Do not make quiet a scavenger hunt inside a talking product. A rider should not have to accept personalization, browse a menu or remember a phrase to get a calm cabin.

What riders should be able to tell at a glance

Before conversational AI spreads through more physical spaces, its state needs to be legible where people are sitting. Is it active? What can it change? What cannot it touch? Where is the stop? Those answers should fit on the first screen, not in a privacy policy after a ride.

There is a simple product discipline here: offer help when called, show the boundary when it matters, then stop. Plenty of AI assistants can produce more conversation. The harder design problem is knowing when the ride has already given the passenger what they needed.
