Should you need an AI chatbot to understand a hospital discharge letter?

Going home with a hospital letter you cannot understand leaves you or a relative with another job. A chatbot may help explain it, but a clear letter supplied by the hospital is a fair comparison. An older randomized study in Dresden, conducted in 2019–2020, tested an additional plain-language letter assembled from medically reviewed text blocks using rules, not a generative chatbot. Recipients reported higher health literacy than those given only the conventional letter. That was a questionnaire result, not proof of fewer medication mistakes. And the extra letters were sent roughly five to seven days after discharge—too late to answer the first evening's questions. For an AI explainer, I would want to know whether people can correctly explain their next step before leaving, with staff available to check it. Compare that with a plain-language letter provided at discharge, not just the jargon-heavy original. Easier wording is useful; making the patient hunt for an explanation at home is still work. Which questions should the hospital settle before anyone has to open a chatbot?
