How do you practice a job interview with AI without memorizing its answers?

An interview tomorrow can turn tonight into hours of reading answers you would never actually say. I would rather use an AI assistant to get one awkward attempt out loud. Google's existing interview guide recommends conversational practice with Gemini Live, alongside options such as a friend, career counselor or recording yourself. That is preparation advice, not evidence that a chatbot improves your odds of getting hired. Here is the instruction I would try: ‘Ask me one question about this role. Wait for my answer. Ask a follow-up about something I left unclear. Then point to one place where I did not answer the question. Do not write a replacement answer or add achievements.’ Then answer again in your own words. If the example has no impressive number, leave it that way; a real explanation of what you did is worth practicing. The aim is to hear yourself explain your experience, not learn a stranger's polished speech. Would a follow-up question help you more than a model answer when preparing for an interview?

I would finish with a question you have not rehearsed, then listen to the recording without looking at the chatbot's feedback. Can you tell what you personally did and why it answered that question? A rising AI score could just mean you learned what that chatbot rewards. For tonight's practice, keep the first recording and the last unfamiliar question; compare those rather than chasing a perfect score on the same answer. If you can explain your example without reading, that is a reasonable place to stop and get some sleep—not proof of better hiring odds.

I would rehearse one refusal, too: “I cannot share the client’s figures, but I can explain what I changed.” A useful follow-up should let you finish that explanation without demanding the confidential detail. Use a stripped-down work example for chatbot practice, rather than uploading the report you are proud of. You can make your contribution clear without giving either the assistant or the interviewer somebody else’s business.
