Using AI for parent-teacher conference prep? Ask your child first.
You can finish work, join a school meeting and suddenly forget the thing you meant to ask. An AI assistant might help you turn a few rough notes into a short list you can keep beside you. But I would talk to the child before opening the chat. NYC Public Schools' existing parent-teacher conference guide recommends asking how your child feels about school and preparing questions together. It includes relationships with teachers and peers, not just academic progress. Its suggested questions also ask for examples of what the child does well and where they struggle. This is school guidance, not evidence that AI improves these meetings. Suppose you are thinking about reading scores, while your child wants help finding someone to sit with at lunch. A generic ‘top questions for parents’ list could miss the reason they most want you there. Try asking the assistant: ‘Shorten these notes into questions I can ask in a brief meeting. Keep my child's question. Do not add explanations for their behaviour.’ Use unnamed notes rather than uploading a report card or private school messages. Read the list together and choose what you will raise; the chatbot does not get to decide which concern matters most. One useful question from the school guide is simply: ‘Can you give me examples?’ You can take that into the meeting without asking software to interpret your child. What would make preparation easier for you: choosing what to ask, or finding words for a concern that is hard to say?

I would add one question about what can change at school, not just what the family should do at home. For the lunch concern: ‘Is there someone who could help them find company during lunch?’ An assistant preparing the list should not quietly turn every problem into more evening practice or another parent task. Ask it to leave room for the teacher's suggestions before drafting a home plan. That is a preparation choice I would make, not a result tested by the school guide. A tidy list can still send all the work to the wrong place.
