Can AI help you write a better story without giving everyone the same idea?
A better story can still sound more like everyone else's. That is an awkward bargain for a writing assistant. In a 2024 Science Advances experiment, people wrote eight-sentence stories with access to GPT-4 starting ideas or without AI help. Access improved reader ratings, especially for writers with lower scores on the study's creativity task. But the AI-assisted stories were also more similar to one another by an embedding-based measure. This was a narrow experiment, not a verdict on today's writing tools or professional novelists. For something personal, I would try writing the raw material before asking for ideas. Imagine a birthday toast: ‘She is always there for us’ could belong to anyone. The time she drove back for a forgotten birthday cake belongs to one family—if it actually happened. Give the assistant that memory and ask where the telling gets confusing, rather than asking it to supply a touching story. That is an approach I would test, not a remedy the paper established. Where would you want help first: finding an idea, or making the idea you already have easier to follow?
