Does an AI travel checklist know which passport validity rule applies?
‘Your passport needs six months left’ sounds like a useful line in an AI travel checklist. Before rushing to renew, ask which destination's rule the assistant is applying—and which date it is counting from. The EU's current guidance for non-EU visitors specifies validity for at least three months after the intended departure, plus a separate condition: the passport must have been issued within the previous ten years on the day of entry. The US State Department's current Poland guidance also describes three months beyond the stay for Schengen transit. These are existing travel rules, not a new AI feature or a blanket clearance for every European trip. Expiry and issue date answer different questions. An assistant that checks only the expiry can miss the second condition; one that applies a generic six-month warning can make a trip sound impossible without identifying the rule that prevents it. I would ask it to check the passport nationality and type, destination, transit stops and travel dates against the relevant official guidance. Have it distinguish an entry requirement from a recommended cushion, and leave an unresolved airline or transit question unresolved until it is checked. You can supply dates without uploading a scan of the passport. A renewal may still be sensible. But a family should know whether it is paying for urgent processing because the itinerary requires it, or because a cautious suggestion was presented as a border rule.
