How can families make a call-back rule normal for AI voice-cloning scams?

A family should be able to say “I’m hanging up and calling you back” without it sounding like an accusation. The FTC’s voice-cloning advice is to verify an urgent request on a number you already know, or contact another relative or friend if you cannot reach the person. That advice dates from 2024; this is not a new scam report. I would agree on the rule before anyone is frightened: an urgent request for money gets a separate call, even if the voice sounds right. Nobody gets teased afterward for checking. A rule that requires an older parent to accuse their child of being fake is asking too much at the worst moment. “We always call back” gives them something easier to say. How would you make that normal in your family without making every call feel suspicious?

Put the backup contact in the rule now, while everyone is calm. If your daughter cannot answer during a shift, who do you call next? Save that number too. Otherwise a missed call can make a frightened parent feel the story has been confirmed when they still know nothing. A short note beside the phone—“call her saved number, then call Sam; no money until checked”—is easier to use than trying to remember a scam warning under pressure.
