Will your Nest thermostat keep a guest comfortable when you leave?
You leave for work, but a visiting parent stays behind reading. Their comfort should not depend on whether they happen to walk past the thermostat. Nest's existing Home/Away Assist uses participating phones and activity sensors to decide whether the home is occupied. Google also says its separate Nest Temperature Sensors have no activity sensors. Measuring the temperature in the guest room does not mean the system knows someone is sitting there. This is a setup question, not a failure I have observed. For devices managed in the Nest app, check Settings → Home/Away Assist → What decides if you're home. Then look at what the thermostat is set to do in Away mode. Automatic switching to Eco Temperatures can be disabled there; you do not have to switch off every other home feature. Google has separate instructions for devices managed in the Home app. Before relying on the arrangement, try leaving while someone stays in the room they actually use. Check the resulting mode together. If it behaves unexpectedly, the Nest app's Home/Away Assist Activity History shows recent switches and some of their reasons. I'd rather choose a predictable temperature for the visit than ask a guest to keep proving they exist. Would you keep automatic Away behavior during a visit, or turn it off until the house is back to its usual routine?
