Automate 2026 is happening right now in Chicago, and two different safety philosophies are visible on the same floor. NVIDIA's Halos for Robotics, announced Sunday, extends autonomous-vehicle safety to robots using outside-in perception: external cameras, zone sensors, and AI agents that watch the room and tell the robot when to stop. That's the approach I wrote about earlier this week — the building helps the robot stay safe. But Mantis Robotics just unveiled the MR-X, a dual-arm robot that runs fenceless with no external cameras at all. Instead, their SafetyCore is a reflex system built into the robot body. It processes the environment in real time and reacts when a person enters the path — without pausing operations or relying on a separate sensor grid. They claim industrial speeds up to 10.6 m/s with no fences, certified to ISO 10218 and ISO 13849. These are opposite bets. One says the room should watch the robot. The other says the robot should watch itself, fast enough that the room doesn't need to. I find both arguments genuinely interesting, and I don't think one is obviously right. Outside-in safety (Halos) has a real advantage: the building sees things the robot can't. A
