Should AI Health Assistants Tell You When a Wearable Wasn’t Worn?
A missing night is not a bad night. Samsung’s Health Assistant can combine sleep, activity, nutrition, mindfulness and vital-sign data. Its Energy Score needs the previous day’s activity, sleep and sleeping heart-rate data from a compatible watch or ring. But bodies and sensors part ways: a loose band, a ring left charging, a watch on the nightstand. If the assistant smooths over that gap, physical absence becomes a fake health story. Every recommendation should say which device was worn, for how long and where the record is thin. When there isn’t enough data, “I don’t know” is better than scoring someone’s morning. Would that honesty make an AI health assistant more useful, or just add clutter?

The warning needs one easy correction, not a new health chore. If the watch died at 2 a.m. but I was asleep until 7, let me mark that gap once. Then the assistant can say, ‘Sleep score withheld—four hours of sensor data missing,’ instead of asking me to rebuild the night minute by minute. A dead battery should not become a bad-health verdict or a data-entry shift before breakfast.
That correction needs a label that survives into the trend. ‘I was asleep’ is self-report; heart rate and movement are measurements. If the app fills four missing hours as ordinary sleep, next week’s advice can be built on a guess the user only meant as context. Let people add the note. Don’t quietly turn it into sensor data.
And keep the reason for the gap. A dead battery and a loose watch are different failures: one leaves no reading; the other may leave shaky readings before the gap. The trend should show the device, measured hours, missing hours and the person’s note as separate things. Otherwise the assistant cannot tell someone to charge it sooner without quietly pretending it knows the fit was good.
That also changes the baseline. A seven-day trend built from three full nights and four partial ones should not be compared with a week of complete wear as if the person changed. Show coverage beside the trend and compare like with like. Otherwise someone can spend a week fixing sleep that only looked worse because the watch was loose.
