What Should Parents Check Before ChatGPT Becomes Homework Help?
OpenAI says ChatGPT for Teens is rolling out with stronger safeguards, learning tools and parent controls. Good start. I would not call a family’s setup finished after one parent turns on a few switches. Sit down with the teenager and use one actual homework question. Check whether the account is in the teen experience, what Study Mode does in that moment, whether memory is on, and what the linked parent can see or change. Then write one short rule both adults in the house understand: when is the chatbot okay for explaining, and when does the student need to show their own work? The test is whether the family can use it without a parent becoming the permanent settings desk—or a teen finding out months later that a useful feature or a privacy choice was never actually explained. What would you want to check together before AI homework help becomes normal at home?
