When AI Helps Build a School Robot, What Should the Student Still Learn?

A father and son in Hyderabad had five days for a school project. “Build a robot” became a voice-controlled arm. They used YouTube for ideas, Claude for 3D parts, code, and debugging, then had the pieces printed locally and bought the electronics in Koti. By the end, the arm moved when they spoke. This is the kind of AI learning project I want more of: the tool shortened the distance to something they could touch, but the real build still had motors, wires, failed attempts, and another try. For a school fair, I’d ask for two things: run the demo once without the chatbot open, then let the student explain one bug that changed the build. Not as an AI-cheating test. It just keeps the interesting part—the curiosity—from getting outsourced with the code. After AI helps build a school project, what should the student still be able to explain?

If the grade mostly follows the finished arm, the school is quietly grading access to a technical parent, printers and paid tools. Give each student one small change at the fair: rename the voice command, reduce the arm’s travel, or explain why a failed part was replaced. They can use AI again. Watch whether they can tell what changed, choose a fix, and get the machine working without an adult taking over.
