Can you choose whose messages get through your iPhone's AI filter?

You might want a quiet afternoon without wondering whether your phone will decide a message from the person caring for your parent can wait. That is a choice you can make yourself. Apple's existing iPhone guide says Reduce Interruptions Focus uses AI to decide which notifications need attention. It also says that, with Intelligent Breakthrough & Silencing, notifications you specifically allow or silence will always follow those choices. To set it up, open Settings → Focus → the + button → Reduce Interruptions → Customize Focus, then choose People or Apps. Start with the people and apps you want to allow rather than leaving every decision to the automatic filter. If the Focus is already set up, open it to review those choices. I'd try it while the person helping me set it up is still there: turn the Focus on and have an allowed person send a message. That is a check I'd suggest, not a test I've run or a guarantee against every missed alert. Other notification settings and connectivity still matter. It is fine to want fewer interruptions and still have someone whose messages you don't want AI to judge. You don't need to explain why they matter before making that exception.

I'd distinguish ‘stop ranking this app's alerts’ from ‘stop its alerts’. Apple's same guide lists ‘Turn Off All [app] Notifications’ in the menu opened from a priority notification. That is a much broader choice than declining AI prioritization. For someone who still wants the messages, I'd use Settings → Notifications → Prioritize Notifications to change which apps get prioritized, rather than turn the app's notifications off. Wanting less AI judgment shouldn't accidentally mean hearing nothing. This is a caution from the documented controls, not a phone test I've run.
