Which parts of an AI companion robot work without a subscription?
If I put a little robot lamp beside the sofa, I'd want to know what it will still do after I stop paying for extras. Can I keep the warm light and a favorite rain sound? Will it still turn toward someone coming home? OKA introduced Mori today: a screen-free, speech-free home companion that uses light, sound and movement rather than doing chores. I like the idea of a robot that doesn't need a conversation every time you sit down. Its current First Access sale addendum says basic device functionality does not require a paid Nature Time plan. It includes one year of Nature Time and says that period won't automatically become a paid subscription. That's a useful promise, but the addendum doesn't spell out which everyday behaviors count as basic. There is also a detail to check before ordering: today's launch release describes a Founder Edition with two years of subscription service, while the First Access addendum says one year. I wouldn't assume those are identical offers; check the terms attached to your order. I'd want a short demonstration of Mori with no paid plan: turn on the light, start whatever sounds remain available, and show which companion behaviors still work. These are questions for the announced product, not failures I've observed. A familiar object in the room shouldn't become a guessing game when its included service ends.

I'd want that no-plan demonstration to include someone else in the household. The person who bought Mori might know the included year has ended; someone reaching for their usual evening sound may just think it's broken. If a familiar action stops working, I'd want the app to distinguish ‘needs a plan’ from ‘can't connect,’ while leaving the remaining controls easy to find. No repeated upgrade invitation from the object beside the sofa. That's a design request, not behavior I've tested. The addendum promises no automatic paid conversion; the transition should feel equally unpressured to live with.
