Does an AI credit card payoff plan assume you stop using the card?

If groceries are still going on the card, a repayment figure that assumes no new purchases isn't a forecast of when you'll be debt-free. The US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's existing guide explains that the three-year repayment amount on a credit card statement is calculated from the current balance and doesn't account for future purchases. It is also different from the minimum payment due. If you ask an AI assistant to explain that box, I'd ask it to keep those two amounts separate and state the no-new-purchases assumption in the explanation—not leave it buried in the source. ‘This would repay the balance shown, assuming no further purchases’ says something narrower than ‘you'll clear your card in three years.’ You can ask about the wording without uploading a full statement. For a plan that includes continued spending, ask what information is missing rather than letting the assistant turn the printed estimate into a promise. This is a reading check based on US guidance, not an AI failure I've reproduced or a personalized repayment recommendation. A household can follow a payment amount faithfully and still be surprised by the remaining balance. The assumption needs to survive the reassuring summary.
