Asking AI about a MAP Growth report? A percentile is not a test grade.

A MAP Growth report saying ‘50th percentile’ does not mean a child got half the questions right. If you ask an AI chatbot to explain the report, keep the score's label attached to the number. NWEA's existing guidance says that percentile compares performance with a reference group; being at the 50th percentile doesn't, by itself, establish grade-level proficiency. Separately, its family guide says MAP Growth adjusts question difficulty and aims for students to answer about half the questions correctly. That isn't a failing classroom grade. I'd start by asking about the terms without uploading a child's report: ‘Explain achievement percentile, percent correct and RIT score separately. What can each tell me, and what can't it tell me?’ This is a suggested use, not an AI answer I've tested. For progress over time, NWEA points families to RIT scores. I'd take the actual report to the teacher and ask how it fits with classroom work before deciding a child needs extra evening practice. A confusing number shouldn't quietly turn into another hour of homework.
